Supplement Spotlight - CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)

When you want to get into good physical shape, there is no substitute for hard work.  You have to work hard in each of your workouts.  You have to work at cardio, strength, and endurance.  You also have to work hard at getting your nutrition right.  Without all of that, you're only going to get so far toward your fitness goals.  Once you have that down, then you can start to look to supplements to take you to the next level.

A supplement that I've been researching lately is CLA, or conjugated linoleic acid.  CLA has been shown to help you rbody metabolize proteins and balance body fat.  CLA can be found naturally in beef and dairy products, but so little of it is available through those sources, that supplementation is the best route to getting the benefical product.

Benefits of CLA

  • CLA supports building lean mass
  • Through the added lean mass, CLA will help increase your metabolism to make you even leaner
  • CLA aids the metabolization of stored body fat to be used as energy for your muscles
  • As a beneficial fatty acid, CLA has many anti-oxidant properties

How does CLA Work

Conjugated linoleic acid has been shown to affect how the body uses the fat that already exists and well as the new fats being ingested.  CLA helps the body metabolize its fat stores, allowing them to be used in the muscles for energy.

Side Effects of CLA

According to the FDA, CLA is listed as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).  Numerous clinical trials have taken place and no adverse side effects have been noted.  Pure CLA also should not contain any stimulants such as caffeine or ephedra, making it a safer choice as a fat-loss supplement.

CLA Dosage

Studies vary on the efficacy of various doses, but many state that you need at least 1000mg to 1250mg of CLA to get its effect.  I always recommend following the dosage listed on the product you buy, assuming you buy from a reputable source.

CLA is a safe product that may help you lose body fat and gain lean mass.  It is derived from natual sources and can help you get the body you want.  If you have your workouts and diet in control, check out CLA as another tool in your arsenal.
